Ironbridge Gorge

Brief description

Famous as a symbol of the industrial revolution, this site includes the world’s first bridge constructed of iron (clue is in the title!!). You can stay in a house restored by the Landmark Trust overlooking the bridge.

I visited many times when I was young – I remember walking down a dark tunnel to see the Tar Pit – a curious pool of shiny black stuff coming out of the ground (much smaller relative of the huge La Brea pitch lake in Trinidad)
