Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System

Brief description

The coastal area of Belize is an outstanding natural system consisting of the largest barrier reef in the northern hemisphere, offshore atolls, several hundred sand cays, mangrove forests, coastal lagoons and estuaries.

Unesco WHS list ref:  764

We visited Belize in November 2016. An amazing trip, which included snorkelling in the Ha Chan reserve, Mexico Rocks and Shark Ray Alley – all part of the reef system. We met turtles, sharks, rays, moray eels and masses of colourful fish.
